What is Car Camping?

Car camping is when you drive directly to a camp spot. You park at the camp site. Unload your gear from your car right into the site. No need for hiking, backpacking, or carrying your gear in. This is a great option for little humans.

All car camping info will be here:

A short summary of a trip, in some sort of order, might be something like this:

*Important*
(Optional)

  1. decide your (groups) trip length
[how long do you think you’ll be able to make it? what’s your goal this time going out?]

  2. choose a location
[what biome do you want to camp in? how far away from home do you want to drive? how deep into no cell coverage do you want to go? how long do you want your return trip to be when you’re tired and just want a shower?]

  3. (make reservations if applicable)
[some places you need reservations, some you don’t.]

  4. (*check native-land.ca*)
[donate accordingly in association with whose land you’re staying on]

  5. *share your trip itinerary with one+ person(s)*
[leave information of where you plan to go, how long you’ll be there, and when you’ll be back. then text them when you are back safe. leave correct info with instructions on who/where [a ranger(station)] to call if you’re not back by an expected time on an expected date.]

  6. check the weather
    [unless you can control it.]

  7. *check local state and area fire restrictions*

  8. (*apply for local state/area fire permit*)

  9. choose your shelter
[are you gonna sleep in your car, on the ground, in a tent, in a hammock, or something else?]

  10. *test setting up shelter at home*
[familiarize and make yourself comfortable with what you’re taking outside to live in and depend on.]

  11. choose activities
[hiking, whittling, slack-lining, resting, bird watching, prospecting, snacking, bugging out, whatevering…]

  12. choose other gear
[from activities, kitchen things, clothes, everything other than your shelter. what’re you taking? double check against a gear checklist. I will add one to the Pseudo-Trip we plan next.]

  13. decide meals
    [you probably will get hungry.]

  14. (test any other gear or meals at home)

  15. pack gear
[put your stuff in something to take it to the place you’re going.]

  16. the journey
[mapquest the heck out of this spot. save directions, and maybe return directions too. download the location in your phone GPS app.]

  17. (fill up your car’s gas tank or battery near your destination)
[this will give you plenty of fuel to find your way back out or run your car in case of emergency.]

  18. (embark as early as possible)
[make sure you have plenty of daylight for camp setup upon arrival. setting up in the dark teaches you little except frustration and the importance of leaving early.]

  19. setup camp

  20. touch the ground.
[then close your eyes. breathe in and out. tell the Earth you missed them.]

  21. *eat*

  22. (sleep)

  23. (*have fun*)

  24. (note what you might want different next time)

  25. (repeat 21-24 as you see fit)
[or until your reservation runs out]

  26. *pack out everything*
[take everything you brought with you back home, including anything and everything.]

  27. do a visual scan of your area and the entire site
[double check the spaces you inhabited, don’t leave any human stuff behind. pretend someone is tracking you and do your best to leave no trace.]

  28. load up
[put your stuff back in your vehicle.]

  29. return home
[*leave by checkout time if you made a reservation.*]

  30. tell your friends

  31. plan your next trip
